If you have turned on a collegiate women’s basketball game lately, you have probably seen Dee Kantner in action. Most likely you didn’t even realize you were seeing Dee – she is a women’s basketball official and one of the best the game has ever seen. As an official, by definition, Dee prefers to go unnoticed.
One place Dee does not go unnoticed is in the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Board room. Dee is currently serving as Vice President, a great role for someone with a heart as big as Dee’s. Several years ago, she joined the Board and quickly worked to galvanize women’s basketball officials nationwide in support of the Fund. It has been amazing to watch as officials, coaches, players, and fans have united in the fight against ALL cancers affecting women.
Dee is just one person in a larger family – a family of women’s basketball officials. Yes, a lot of what has transpired started with Dee – her energy, her giving spirit. BUT…Dee is quick to point the spotlight on the larger group. Over the last year, the officials have raised more than $130,000 for the Fund through an officials’ campaign and their support of the annual Kay Yow Cancer Fund Golf Classic.
Nationwide, officials are seeking ways to use their platforms, on and off the court, to give to the Fund. It is a reminder to us all that in the fight against cancer, we are all on the same team.
